Avalon

Finally got to see Mamoru Oshii’s Avalon tonight. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it before, at least from a visual point of view. Absolutely stunning. The music by Kenji Kawai – overwhelming. If only the pacing of the plot wasn’t so bad >_< The atmosphere throughout 95% of the film is far from dense, in fact so stretched and thin I could see through my TV screen. Also, the lack of emotions in the acting makes for some nice two-dimensional characters (oh the irony!). Hell, I've never felt more distanced from a heroine before. The way she didn't care for the people who should be important to her made me not really care for her either. Ah, it's such a shame. This could've been such an amazing, wonderful, mind-blowing, awe-inducing film. *dies* A must-see for any science fiction, heck any movie enthusiast, nevertheless. Just give it a lot of time; especially the last third of the movie is worth a million mediocre Hollywood flicks.

Kamio Youko’s Cat Street Pt. 2

A few days ago (Friday?) I went to the post office to pick up my copy of Betsuma 9. Couldn’t wait to get home because I was so looking forward to the 4th and last part of Aruko’s omnibus yomikiri series Sayonara Taiyou and the 2nd installment of Kamio Youko’s new series after finishing Hana yori dango, Cat Street. I have a feeling this is going to be a long series again because this chapter takes a lot of time of introducing the main characters even further. There aren’t many new things revealed about Keito’s life but the small episodes of her childhood in this chapter are very touching again. And we’re also introduced to a completely new character, Harasawa Taiyou, whom Keito went to elementary school with and who dreams of becoming a Seria A football player. We also get to know a bit more about the light-haired boy, Rei, the guy Keito slapped in the first chapter ^^;

But as far as a bigger story development goes, well there’s not much new stuff in this chapter. Keito still hasn’t decided whether to attend this free school and at one part of this chapter she even says that offer was kind of pointless because she’s too old to start school anyway – but of course we know she’s gonna end up there sooner or later ^_~

I’m very satisfied with the story so far (in fact, it’s one of my favourite series in Betsuma at the moment). Cat Street is told in a very mature, sometimes nostalgic and sad kind of way which makes this exactly my kind of story. I like the well-balanced plot pacing, it’s not too rushed and everyone gets a good deal of character introduction/development. Keito is a so-not-perfect heroine which makes her very likeable and you know she’s going to have to learn so much from a social point of view, it’s going to be interesting to watch her grow as a person as the series progresses.

Cat Street

Kamio Youko’s new series called Cat Street started in the August issue of Betsuma. I’m not into Hana yori dango at all so I wasn’t really psyched when they announced Kamio’s new manga would be running in Betsuma. But Cat Street isn’t that bad, actually. In fact, I quite liked the first installment.

Keito, the heroine, is really mysterious at first because she doesn’t say a word and you only see people mentioning rumours about her whenever she appears. But the first chapter also revealed a lot of her past already. Her parents made her a child star who appeared in all sorts of commercials. But all she wanted was being a normal school girl and having friends like everyone else.

The story is pretty emotional in a non-kitschy way. You really feel Keito’s loneliness and understand her desperateness to become friends with the girl she’s sharing her role with in the musical. The girl she taught how to dance and act on stage. The girl who eventually got better than Keito, betrayed their friendship and put an end to Keito’s career.

The end of the chapter set up the storyline for what is to come in the series. Looks like Keito will finally be able to be a normal (? NOT!)  schoolgirl. Can’t wait for the second installment!
